The City
Known colloquially as “Egret Island,” Xiamen is a prominent coastal city in China that serves as one of the country’s original five Special Economic Zones. Its deep-rooted history begins in 282 A.D. as part of Tong’an County, evolving through various administrative shifts under the Jin, Tang, and Ming Dynasties before Xiamen Town was officially built in 1387
Today, Xiamen is a vibrant cultural hub where the South Fujian Dialect is predominantly spoken among its residents. The modern municipality is currently organized into six distinct administrative districts: Siming, Huli, Jimei, Haicang, Tong’an, and Xiang’an.
