MDIA 4990 (International Media) takes students to the heart of picturesque southwest England and the ancient port city of Bristol with its top 10 ranked University of Bristol in the company of Prof. Nate Snow, an alumni of the institution. For one month, students will be hosted by the University of Bristol, staying in student housing on its historic campus with breakfast and dinner included. Each week, faculty from Bristol's department of Film and Television will be delivering lectures on their areas of expertise, ranging from Studio Ghibli, UK Television, Italian Cinema and more. Program leader Dr. Snow supplements these lectures with examples and context, providing students with the opportunity to apply global and cross-cultural perspectives to critically evaluate media production, promotion and consumption. MDIA 4990 then heads out of the classroom where Dr. Snow actively involves students in international media with behind-the-scenes excursions to Aardman Animation Studios to meet the animators behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, BBC Studios to speak with real producers to discover how UK television is made as well as other beautiful and engaging sites and media experiences in vibrant southwest England.
When students are not engaged in the classroom or on a guided media experience they are free to explore all that the charming city of Bristol has to offer, such as visiting the bustling waterfront district for authentic fish and chips, hiking Brandon Hill for the stunning view from Cabot Tower or exploring the shops at Cabot Circus. Connected via bus or rail in minutes to other scenic cities such as Bath and Cardiff, and only a 90 minute trip to London, students in MDIA 4990 have England at their fingertips.
MDIA 4990 also fills upper-division MDIA, FIL and ART elective graduation requirements.
