Running along the western margin of South America, the Andes is the world’s second-largest mountain belt. The area is a land of extremes characterized by vast landscapes, high topography, and active volcanoes. In this study abroad experience, students will explore the key geologic components of the Andes in northwestern Argentina, seeing how rock observations tell us about the evolution of the mountain range. Along the way, we will learn about the implications that these mountains have for plate tectonics and the Earth’s crust.
